If I get hurt on the job, what should I do?
If I get hurt on the job, what should I do? - Immediately complete an Employee's Report of Accident or Injury available from your Office Administrator or your Branch President (in the Branch President's Manual).
- Regardless of whether the injury seems severe or not, seek immediate medical aattention at your Doctor's office, a walk-in clinic or a hospital emergency department. This is important. A slip and fall, for example, may just leave you feeling rattled to begin with, but if there is subsequent back trouble or other issues arising from the accident and you did not report the incident to a medical practitioner, you will have a very difficult time claiming WSIB.
- NOTE: Being attended by someone with First Aid certification, or simply treating yourself with first aid will not provide you with the appropriate protective documentation should it be required.
- Tell your medical practitioner that your injury occurred at work.
- If the injury is a result of a violent incident, complete the Violent Incident Reporting form (appended below) and inform your Executive Officer.
- If the injury is the result of an unsafe condition at your workplace, for example slippery, wet floor or unsalted, icy parking lot, complete a Health and Safety concern form and call your Executive Officer who will contact the Health and Safety Inspector for your school.
- If you will be off work because of the injury tell the person at your worksite to whom you would normally report absence from work that you will be off because of an injury in the workplace and that you will be making a WSIB claim.
- Make sure to keep copies of all documentation in the event that you require the assistance of the Union with pursuing a WSIB claim.
